pH and the Menopausal Vagina!

Did you know your vagina should be acidic? I didn’t have a clue! Not until I came across VJJ Health…

An important indicator of the health of the vaginal microbiome (and therefore the vagina) is it’s level of acidity, measured by pH. This acidity helps to stop you getting infections like Thrush, Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and especially in menopause, Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

pH is measured on a scale of 1-14. At the lowest end, it is highly acidic and at the top end, very alkaline.

In the body, the vagina is one of the most acidic parts with a healthy pH of 3.8-4.5, blood at 7.4 is very slightly alkaline and sperm, one of the most alkaline substances in the body has a normal range from 7.5-8.

This acidity in the vagina is caused by the good Lactobacillus bacteria that should predominate. You can see if your vagina has a healthy pH by taking a simple pH test like the one available from VJJ Health by clicking the link here..

These good bacteria are supported by the presence of Oestrogen which creates a perfect environment for them to live-in called the Vaginal Mucosa. As we go through menopause, our oestrogen level drops and our all-important vaginal mucosa starts to disappear. The consequence of this is a loss of the Lactobacillus and therefore a vagina which has less protection against infection.

There is really interesting research now starting to come out that shows that topping-up your good Lactobacillus daily can maintain your healthy vaginal microbiome and improve comfort. Including the correct vaginal probiotic supplement such as Perfect V alongside HRT or with Vaginal Oestrogen would be a very good idea for the maintenance of a healthy vagina.

Think of it as the equivalent of sunscreen for your vagina – keeping it healthy and slowing aging!!!!

I am really curious about the pH of my own vagina!! So have ordered myself the Vaginal pH bundle! Test, take Perfect V, and test again! Will let you know how I get on, love Leanne x
