For many women, menopause introduces a range of physical changes, and one of the most frustrating can be hair texture.
Hair that was once smooth and full-bodied may become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage, often feeling “straw-like.”
Understanding what’s behind these changes—and how to manage them—can make a big difference in maintaining healthy hair during this transition.
My hair is a disaster! Not straight, not curly, just a big, frizzy mess that does whatever it wants. And with this wet, humid weather…I’m basically Monica from ‘Friends’!
The main culprit for these hair changes during menopause is that familiar hormonal shift, particularly the drop in oestrogen levels. Oestrogen plays a key role in keeping hair healthy by extending the growth phase and helping it retain moisture. When oestrogen levels dip, so does the production of natural oils (sebum) that keep our hair hydrated. This loss of moisture can make hair dry, brittle, and dull.
At the same time, the balance of oestrogen to androgens (male hormones) changes, with androgens taking the lead. This shift can shrink hair follicles and lead to thinning or shedding, adding to the fragile, straw-like texture.
Menopause can also bring new nutritional needs, and deficiencies in vital vitamins and minerals can impact hair health. Low levels of iron, vitamin D, and B vitamins may contribute to thinning and dryness. Eating a nutrient-rich diet with biotin, omega-3s, and antioxidants is essential for supporting hair growth and strength.
And, of course, staying hydrated is crucial. Dehydration can make dry, brittle hair even more prone to damage.
Environmental factors like sun exposure, heat styling, and chemical treatments can also weaken menopausal hair. Because hair becomes more fragile during this stage, minimising these stressors is key.
Using heat-protective sprays, avoiding over-washing, and choosing gentler, sulphate-free shampoos can help reduce damage and lock in moisture. It’s overwhelming, though, isn’t it? With so many products out there, where do you even begin?
Though there’s no magic fix to get Rapunzel-level hair, there are plenty of ways to improve its condition:
Moisturise: Regularly use deep conditioning treatments to restore moisture and soften texture.
Limit Heat Styling: Excessive heat can strip natural oils, worsening dryness.
Choose carefully: Look for products made for dry or aging hair, especially those with nourishing ingredients like argan oil or keratin.
Scalp Care: Don’t forget your scalp. Keep it healthy by massaging it to boost blood flow and oil production or consider hydrating scalp treatments.
