As a GP I have the profound privilege of patients coming to see me and trusting me to share their deepest worries and concerns. They will often have symptoms which they may feel embarrassed about and which they struggle to share. This is never more so than for women who are going through menopause. So often I have come across women who have taken months or years to build up to courage to come and see a healthcare professional about their symptoms. Even then they often don’t volunteer some of the symptoms which they feel embarrassed about or that they don’t realise could be related. They may have had a difficult experience with another professional, not have felt heard in the past, or feel pressure from society that they ‘should’ be able to cope. I feel a great responsibility to increase the awareness of menopause and the impact it can have on a woman in all aspects of her life, both with my professional colleagues and with women who might need that little extra confidence to seek help, some knowledge of what their options are or simply to understand their symptoms and why they are happening.
